Together we offer the Ä¢¹½tvÊÓƵ Way:

The Ä¢¹½tvÊÓƵ Way is who we are and what we believe

It defines how we work to deliver the best possible care and outcomes for our patients.

We know that in order to deliver excellent high quality care for our patients we need to have the very best staff working together towards the same goals.

Using the latest crowdsourcing technology, we undertook our largest staff engagement programme at the Trust to develop our vision, values and goals.

Our staff were asked to describe the behaviours and leadership they believed were needed to be the very best and achieve our vision. These were used to define what our organisation stands for and ‘how we do things here’ at Ä¢¹½tvÊÓƵ Teaching Hospitals.

Information:

The strength of ‘The Ä¢¹½tvÊÓƵ Way’ is that it has been created by our staff who have taken ownership of our values and ensure we live them day to day.

Our staff worked together to develop our values. These help us to fulfil our potential, achieve our vision and deliver the best possible care for our patients.

Our urological team focuses on providing appropriate, compassionate, and state-of-the art care for our patients. We believe in treating the patient as a whole, which is why our multidisciplinary approach is so important.

Core values

  • To put the patient’s interest first
  • To work as an effective team to provide a prompt, high-quality, comprehensive caring service to patients
  • To have a evidence-based approach to our service with explicit professional standards
  • To develop an inclusive, supportive culture where staff can be proud of the care given to patients
  • To encourage and develop the careers of all our staff
  • To be actively involved in teaching and training of Junior doctors

Our Strategic Aims

  • To work with patients, the Trust and Primary Care to provide the highest standards of core and specialist urology delivered by a committed, multidisciplinary team
  • To work with the Trust to deliver its corporate objectives
  • To regularly evaluate our ways of working and to look for innovation as a means of improving service delivery
  • To communicate clearly and promptly with patients and colleagues
  • To work with regional hospitals to develop a network of services across Yorkshire
  • To develop an nationally and internationally recognised centre for clinical work, teaching and training
  • To work jointly with fundraising groups to promote and generate additional funds for urology

Patient Centered

  • Consistently deliver high quality, safe care
  • Organise around the patient and their carers and focus on meeting their individual needs.
  • Act with compassion, sensitivity and kindness towards patients

Fair

  • We will treat others how we would wish to be treated
  • Strive to maintain the respect and dignity of each patient, being particularly attentive to the needs of vulnerable groups.

Collaborative

  • Recognise we are all one team with a common purpose
  • Include all relevant patients and staff in our discussions and decisions
  • Work in partnership with patients, their families, and other providers – they will feel in control of their health and care needs

Accountable

  • Act with integrity and always be true to our word
  • Be honest with patients, colleagues and our communities at all times
  • Disclose results and accept responsibility for our actions

Empowered

  • Empower colleagues and patients to make decisions
  • Expect colleagues to help build and maintain staff satisfaction and morale – more can be achieved when staff are happy and proud to come to work

Ä¢¹½tvÊÓƵ has been selected as one of the five Trusts to take part in the NHS Improvement Partnership working with NHS Improvement and the world-renowned Virginia Mason Institute in Seattle.

We are one of only five trusts in the UK to work with the prestigious Virginia Mason Institute on a programme we know as the Ä¢¹½tvÊÓƵ Improvement Method. The partnership was announced in July 2015 against a backdrop of a system refocusing on quality improvement within tighter financial constraints in healthcare.

This is a five year partnership to support accelerated transformation in quality.

In summary, the Ä¢¹½tvÊÓƵ Improvement Method:

  • Is Patient-focused
  • Is the application of observation and data analysis tools, to describe how patients experience our services
  • Supports staff to systematically remove waste
  • Promotes zero defects and zero harm for patients
  • Uses a disciplined timeframe
  • Encourages participation and respect for each other as equals

Urology is one of the first areas using the Ä¢¹½tvÊÓƵ Improvement Method to improve our services. Specifically, the Transurethral Resection of the Prostate (TURP) patient pathway has been improved through a succession of rapid process improvement workshops. These are weeklong workshops where a group of seven or eight staff involved in a different part of the pathway, work to improve the way the service works, with the aim of making it more effective and to improve the patient experience.

Areas that have been looked at in the rapid process improvement workshops so far are:

  • Clinical Checkpoints (reducing length of stay for TURP patients)
  • Effective Preparation for TURP patients
  • Preparing the Electronic Discharge Advice Note
  • Trial without catheter
